SuppoRTT plans are unique to each person returning depending on your training needs. This should be discussed with your Educational Supervisor and in some cases Training Programme Director prior to your return.

Most doctors undertake a period of enhanced supervision during their first 2 weeks.

What is enhanced supervision?

  • Enhanced supervision is a short, intensive period where the resident doctor is given a greater level of supervision in practice. This may include supported ward rounds, extra time in clinic with opportunity for discussion with supervisors, focussed learning activities or direct observation of clinical skills. It is expected the returning doctor will carry out usual duties with extra support.
  • Enhanced supervision can include out of hours duties provided appropriate supervision is available e.g. paired with another resident doctor to allow extra time for clinical skills and assessments, discussion of tricky cases etc.
  • The length of this will be specific to each resident doctor and their needs. Most will be able to resume full duties after 2 weeks/10days pro rata and many return to full duties before that.
