SuppoRTT is a national initiative introduced in April 2017 which aims to support all doctors and dentists in training to safely and confidently return to training following a period of sustained (over 3 months) absence.
How does it work
SuppoRTT is a series of 3 structured meeting between the resident doctor and educational supervisor. The templates for these are on the East and West Midlands SuppoRTT websites and should be completed for each meeting.
- Meeting 1 – Planning your leave – Should be held 3 months prior to starting time out of training, or as soon as possible if leave is unplanned e.g. sick leave
- Meeting 2 – Planning your return – Should be held 3 months prior to returning to training
- Meeting 3 – Reviewing your return – Should be held 2 weeks after the resident doctor returns to training
What is a SuppoRTT plan?
- At your ‘Planning your return’ meeting with your Educational Supervisor, a plan should be agreed to facilitate your safe return to clinical practice and training. For most doctors/dentists, this will be a period of enhanced supervision during your first 2 weeks of returning to training. Occasionally, resident doctors may require a supernumerary period. This should be discussed with your supervisor and the SuppoRTT team for approval.
